Driven by its commitment to become the “learning hub for creativity and innovation”, the Montessori De Sagrada Familia is rearing to implement an integrated teaching approach in the coming years to further develop 21st century skills of its students.
Mrs. Maria Carmela Santos-Ong, assistant principal for the elementary and preschool department, expressed hopes that the new teaching approach will create an authentic learning experience as students will be more involved in classroom activities.
While there is no definite timeline regarding its implementation, teachers and administrators under the preschool and lower grade school department recently completed the second leg of professional development seminars focused on the Integrated Thematic Approach. The series of training-workshops initiated by the school are being guided by Dr. Trixie Marie Sison, Dean of the College of Education in Miriam College.
The integrated thematic approach features a stronger connection of concepts, skills, and values taught across the different subject areas, which makes lessons more comprehensible and relatable to real-life situations.
Ong said that the integrated thematic approach will maximize the roles of the students in the classroom thus creating a sense of responsibility on their own learning.
Furthermore, the school will hold more seminars and faculty training about the teaching approach to prepare its teachers and ensure quality learning.
