Woodpusher champ David Joshua Orense ruled the BulPriSA District Meet Chess High School Event to seal a remarkable triumph to end a 20-year title drought in Montessori De Sagrada Familia’s Chess history at Marian College, Baliwag, Bulacan yesterday.
“Next year, champion na!” As promised from last year’s downhill, Orense’s words transmuted into actions proclaiming his comeback with an unstained 6-0 standing after dethroning his former nemesis from Notre Christi Academy of the Philippines, Christian Jasmin.
Orense started the match building a wall to repel Jasmin’s pounding offense, but these attacks make a bridge in Orense’s final blows.
After being hit at offense, Orense recovered and unleashed his inner Magnus Carlsen, to take the turn to attack and bagging the victory.
“See you in Provincials!” Final remarks said by Jasmin.
“Hindi ito yung unang beses na lumaban ako, pero dahil don natuto ako at masasabi ko na totoo pala yung try and try until you succeed.”, he said after recalling that he won 2nd last year and 5th in the year before.
Coach Sir Mamerto Tubis commented that he was very proud because after 20 years MDSF had its champion in the said event and that David had promised last year that he would win this year’s match.
Leaving a message for the future players, the victor ended the interview with a “Beat my record” remark.
Orense will proceed in the Provincial II meet level carrying the school’s pride and the district III vanity.
